April 2023 by Joanna Lenczuk (PyLadies Dublin Feb 2024)</video:title><video:description>Joanna Lenzcuk talks about testing machine learning code in Python.

When: Tuesday, April 18, 2023
Where: LinkedIn One Wilton Park, Dublin, Ireland

How to test Machine Learning code in Python?
======================================
(30 minutes) The aim of this presentation is to illustrate the process of unit testing machine learning code using Python. Although unit testing is a familiar practice among software engineers, it is equally important for data scientists to employ it. The first segment of the talk will be a brief overview of the theory and objectives of unit testing. In the second part, I will provide practical examples of using pytest to test functions which relate to machine learning problems. I will demonstrate how to create a basic test for these types of functions, as well as a parameterized test, a mock, and a fixture.

About Joanna Lenczuk

I am a data scientist based in Dublin, Ireland. I have over three years of experience in machine learning projects. I acquired my analytical and coding skills in areas such as e-commerce, insurance and utilities. Currently, I work as a data scientist at CKDelta - a fast-growing data innovation start-up. In my current role, I am responsible for developing ML models and implementing MLOps practices.

(30 mins) People are leaving their jobs in droves right now – some are looking for opportunities for advancement, others are changing careers. But knowing what’s next can be tricky. Some people rely on friends, coworkers, or even career advisors for support in making a decision. Others endlessly scroll the internet in search of answers to where or what to do. For women, it may be even harder to decide next career steps. Women’s career direction can sometimes be imposed by society or their families and research have found that women tend to screen themselves out of the conversation and end up applying to 20% fewer jobs than men.
But help may be closer than you think, if you tap into the power of AI. AI can help infer potential career opportuni...</video:description><video:content_loc>https://peertube-codinggrace.nbg1.your-objectstorage.com/streaming-playlists/hls/0e31c9e3-616f-4fc0-9b7b-a9bc0dfe8418/4a368c42-8808-4fce-9877-0356c290afba-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://peertube.codinggrace.com/videos/embed/2KEpu4mdSwR4suahCrmu7u</video:player_loc><video:duration>2800</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-04-12T12:35:43.906Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>Python</video:tag><video:tag>IWD2022</video:tag><video:tag>PyLadies London</video:tag><video:tag>PyLadies Dublin</video:tag><video:tag>PyLadies</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://peertube.codinggrace.com/c/pyladiesdublin/videos">PyLadies Dublin</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://peertube.codinggrace.com/w/dwLmRqzhJy14rcp3n7nE6h</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://peertube.codinggrace.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/addd5203-3a2c-42fb-a671-ad59553e9749.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>PyLadies Dublin April Meetup: Crack The Code - My First Python Project</video:title><video:description>🗓️ Tuesday, April 19, 2022 (18:30-19:30)

Talk 1 : Reproducible machine learning projects with DVC and Poetry by Doreen Sacker

Description:
(20mins) Data Science teams live in the Python ecosystem, this means often using pip for package management and DIY solutions for data collaborations and training pipelines. The problem though is spending quite a bit of time on things that are annoying and unnecessary, such as package conflicts, missing data, and manual training processes. In this talk, I will tell you more about DVC and Poetry. Poetry resolves conflicts automatically, without you having to do it manually. DVC keeps track of assets used in projects, so we don’t have to. I want to share my experience with both tools, how it made it easier for us to work with shared data files, run training pipelines effortlessly, and let poetry handles all conflict resolution of packages.

About Doreen

Creative coding in Python by Beatrice Ionascu

Description:
----------------
Through the lens of the work we’re doing at imagiLabs, I will present an approach of teaching coding to children and teenagers in a way that engages girls in particular. I will explain how computer science and Python basics that are normally taught as part of introductory computer science classes can be combined with creativity, self-expression, and a community in order to create a welcoming environment and an intriguing coding experience. I will show how we follow the constructionist and constructivist theories in education, in which discovery learning, “building” knowledge, personal exploration, and relevant learning are instrumental. I will discuss how at imagiLabs we have developed a curriculum around these principles and the findings of our own user-centered research. Finally, I will show some of our Creative coding in Python activities in action. Come ready to get creative, get inspired, and learn how you can express yourself through code!

About Beatrice Ionascu
-------------------------------------
Beatrice is the co-founder and CTO of imagiLabs. She’s an engineer and an educator and believes that technology education is the key to create a better world. A diversity advocate, she strives to inspire and empower girls through imagiLabs.

Automatic multiclass news classification using deep learning ( LSTM) and word embedding with NLP technology by Nandita Sharma

Description:
----------------
So basically in this project I used NLP technology to categories news types under respective category automatically using word embedding and Deep learning LSTM.
For example : if there are news about beauty or about cricket then machine will automatically filter it's input under category of personal care or sports.
(My proposed state of art is better than previous researchers state)
Results- Achieved good accuracy of 82% with good precision and recall.

TALKS
=====
Talk1: "Research Survivor" by Qishan Yang (PyLadies Dublin)
Description:
(15 mins) My research and career. My PhD. research was about data warehouse architecture modelling, investigation, and evaluation. I also did some research on novel concepts and state-of-the-art technologies for data management in the context of big data.

After my Ph.D., I joined a project as a postdoc researcher. This project used deep learning models to investigate gait data for health. It is the first system to provide gait analysis as a service generating spatial and temporal gait features from videos. Currently, I am working in a start-up company, which provides insights into what's happening and what's working (or not) for staff in a company. It also enables Leaders and HRs to make faster and better decisions.

Bio:
Data Scientist at Wrky (Dublin City University). I have been using Python for a couple of years during my research and current work. Before Python, I was using c++ and Java to build up systems, websites and analyse data.
